Bell cleared to buy Astral Media, creates a Canadian TV powerhouse
Bell tried to shake the Canadian media landscape last year with the acquisition of Astral Media, but ran into a roadblock CRTC size - Regulators do not want 25 television stations in one source movement. After some major concessions, however, Bell received permission to buy Astral for $ 3.2 billion. The revised agreement gives control Bell 12 channels including The Movie Network, HBO Canada owns. Bell is downloading something television content important step forward, however. Corus has several recognizable channels, including Cartoon Network and Teletoon, while large resorts such as Disney XD and MuchMusic are at auction. Not that Bell complains too loudly when the purchase closes July 5, of course. The merger also gives 35.8 percent of the television market in English Canada and 22.6 per cent of French-Canadian equivalent, or enough to eclipse immediate rivals Rogers and Quebecor.
