postheadericon Will The Next Secretary Of State Support Internet Freedom Or SOPA?

Last week, said one of the favorites of Representatives of the Congress of Hollywood, Howard Berman, lost his re-election (due in part to re-drawing of constituency boundaries, put it against another licensee). For years, Berman has been a go to guy for the entertainment industry in search of questionable invoices expansion passes author. Berman used to run the "Subcommittee IP" Justice Commission - which one might think that this is a major conflict of interest, since (literally) represented some of Hollywood. Surprisingly, when he led Affairs Committee Foreign following line of investigation subcommittee was Rep. Rick Boucher - an advocate of copyright reform said. Magically, the Sub-Committee of Judicial IP has disappeared. Boucher When lost in the next election and a maximalist was available again, the subcommittee magically reappeared.

Anyway, as a large number of sources have reported today Berman lost, is on the short list of potential candidates to become the new Secretary of State Hillary Clinton after entering next year. Though many thought John Kerry would take the position (which you will), it is now feared that the government does not want to leave the Senate, his seat is likely to revert to the Republicans (Scott Brown, Elizabeth Warren narrowly lost this time.) Another candidate, Susan Rice (U.S. Ambassador to the UN) is in a world of controversy at the moment about the situation in Benghazi. Berman This leaves better (although there are others).

However, because the State Department is a strong supporter of the principles of freedom on the Internet. Clinton has made Internet freedom a key element of its approach to the State Department. Actually, we heard from several sources that the inner vision of the State Department was against SOPA because it would undermine efforts to Internet freedom abroad. Similarly, we learned that the State Department pressure on the White House helped to administrative decision against SOPA suppression.

Although Berman is known to have a good knowledge of foreign policy issues, their positions on Internet freedom and the right author must clearly indicate that it is a bad choice for Secretary of State. Whereas people in the state realized how he had soup, Berman was co-sponsor of SOPA, and continued to defend this bill to the end - the argument that it would have no impact on freedom of expression and emphasis in copyright infringement is no different from stealing. Berman also Hillary Clinton, who tried to talk

SOPA and wrong in his letter on the relationship between copyright and freedom of expression, meant that the Department of State supported SOPA (otherwise).
Given all this, the application is progress ask people to sign a letter to the White House not to appoint Replacement Clinton Berman. really seems that it is too beholden to a particular industry which is the right person for the State Department. To do what everyone expected, and collect a lobbying the entertainment industry
