postheadericon Roy Ewans obituary

My father, Roy Ewan, who died aged 94, was head of design and engineering of Vulcan Mk 2 bombers and one of the leading designers of British aircraft after the war . The Vulcan, designed as a nuclear deterrent, was a radical design and was the greatest moment of the delta-wing aircraft ever built. One hundred thirty-six of the attackers were made for the RAF and was in operation from 1956 to 1984. The only time I participated in a combat mission during the Falklands War, when used to drop conventional weapons. A plane is still maintained by fans and Roy was very proud to see its first flight after being made airworthy again in 2007.

Born in Torquay, Devon, won a scholarship to the school of St. Paul, London, and graduated from Imperial College London, with a first in mechanical engineering and a postgraduate degree in aeronautical engineering more. During World War II, Roy worked at the establishment of Royal Aircraft at Farnborough, Hampshire, and after D-Day was sent to France to evaluate the program of German aircraft in the territory formerly occupied , continuing after the Allied advance into Belgium and Germany itself, where he was assigned to the Sixth Army Group.

It made things instead of throwing them away, save the nails and screws in boxes of snuff carefully labeled.

In 1999 Roy had a stroke and he and Enid, who was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease, moved to a residence in Virginia Water, Surrey, where he died in 2005 . Roy is survived by brothers Michael, John and Nick, and I, and seven grandchildren.
