Apple is the latest to promote self-published authors. But how readers benefit?

When we talk about self-publishing, it is common to hear words like "revolution" and "democracy." Normally I'd be wary of throwing around terms such important, but in this case I think they are almost guaranteed. Publishing industry insiders forget this may seem a closed shop for those who do not have the connections or trust. Now, a student can register for Wattpad Welsh and suddenly millions of fans around the world, closely followed by a three books with Random House.

But like any self-published author will tell you, most often in the long success as Beth Reekles of

"Browse some of our favorite tracks of the rising stars of this collection of carefully selected books independently published." seems very unlikely that anyone looking for their next reading may think I'm something of a self-published author. Connection would be like buying music in iTunes and select instead of pop / rock, a category called "songs recorded in the bedrooms of the people."


So who benefits from our promotions guy? Apple, of course: the books are terribly price. Self-published authors (well, those who have already established a following). Editors, I suppose, could be used to register authors have tried and tested. But we stop pretending that the revolution in self-publishing reader includes interest at heart.
