Sheryl Sandberg: the Facebook boss on a self-help mission | Profile
She helped transform two of the largest companies in the world. Now, with an accompanying book and movement that aims to change the lives of other women. But can win his eminent critics?
Sheryl Sandbergnot do things half measures. Thus, when the COO of Facebook profile and business the highest in the world to publish a book that did not sit down, take a couple of interviews and let the light flow in. Not criticism Sandberg try to start a social movement and void.
To the ambitious leadership
Lean, published next month, aims to be not an ordinary book. Since then, he has been helped by a marketing campaign far from ordinary. Sandberg and his team want to create a network of "Lean in circles" across the United States are women between 20 and 30 willing to absorb the teachings and wisdom of the amazing success (and wealthy) Sandberg.
video conferences will look in evening meetings and read about the huge pile of data showing how the dice are loaded against women continue to succeed. In an attempt to mass rearing of female consciousness, the inclination in the circles of membership requirements and a strict format of check-ins, updates, presentations and discussions. Corporate sponsors such as Sony and Johnson & Johnson, are registered as launch partners.
the end, Sandberg, 43, wants to increase the cohorts of women motivated to "bend" their respective careers with aggression and passion, say yes to the challenges and opportunities of work, even if you children, and thus avoid being maintained by patriarchy.
But there was a backlash. Sandberg, as a senior executive of one of the most successful companies in recent American history, is a billionaire. She lives in a big house, a rich and prosperous husband can not afford any help you may need for their two children are supported, so it is in Facebook meetings, conferences, TEDx is Davos .
can not say the same for many working women are single mothers, only the long hours, the fight against sexism even have not rooted the enormous resources that Sandberg built. One of its critics is accentuated Anne-Marie Slaughter, a former senior State Department official who wrote a notable feature in the
Atlantic
Magazinelast year arguing that women who wait to have a family and a career filled in custody at a level unattainable.
"Sheryl Sandberg is both human and super-rich," said slaughter
Fortune
magazine, implying that mere mortals might be better to look elsewhere for advice on their work-life balance.
Slaughter reason. But there is no doubt that Sandberg is the kind of figure that any woman - and, in fact, any man - must find admirable. He reached the top of the world of a man, only 21 Fortune 500 companies are run by women. She became the Silicon Valley in the two biggest names - Google and Facebook - leave their environment dominated by male geeks and nerds
would have been so easy for Sandberg only to write a book about the affairs of life lessons and personal mantras standard: the U.S. shelves away with such works. But Sandberg trying to do something different for social change. She wants to help others reach the same heights sublime rose. Not surprising, then, that one book is not enough. For those who watched the place Sandberg, the surprise is not that she is trying to start a social movement, but it took so long.
Sheryl SandbergWhen Kara was a child growing up in North Miami Beach in the 1970s, where his family had moved to Washington when he was two years old, I used to play with his little brothers . They were trained to follow the house shouting "Good job!" In everything he says.
was perhaps a sign of the confidence that has marked every step of his career Sandberg. Indeed, she shone at school, where he regularly beats her class. Brains ran in his family. His father, Joel, is an eye specialist and her mother, Adele, a PhD and worked as a French teacher before focusing on the education of their children. The family was Jewish and Sandberg parents were actively involved in helping Jews to leave the Soviet Union. Often the weekend, the whole family went to the rallies.

The Insanely Complex Rules The Supreme Court Requires You To Meet To Ask It To Hear Your Case
It was not only the time Greenspan pulled dispute. He also said author Ben Mezrich, Random House Mezrich, and Columbia Pictures, saying more or less re-written his own book. Mezrich book Accidental Billionaires
became the hit movie The Social Network
and Greenspan said both undermine their own book, which was difficult to view on the origins of Facebook. Greenspan himself is represented (pro se) and have not had much luck. The case was dismissed easily by both the District Court and the Court of Appeal. The district court can not remember facts copyright Greenspan. I tend to think that Greenspan legal escapades these things are simple windmills. There is no case here and really should go ahead. That said, there is a tangent of this truly fascinating. After the Court of Appeal again rejected the arguments of Mr. Greenspan, went through the registration process to ask the Supreme Court to hear the case (the chances of this happening are very, very, very thin). However, your blog about why your deposit crazy process that the Supreme Court has passed through the reading worth. Basically, he says that every step of the way the rules are strange, complicated and ridiculous that seem to serve no other than trying to make it more frustrating as hell for a normal person every day for really appeal to the Supreme Court without hiring expensive lawyers and / or services very expensive. It is a fragment of a much longer piece, which I highly recommend, despite my feeling that their applications are a complete waste of time.
The first thing to know is that the final prospectus must be 6 inches and 1/8th width and height and 9 1/4 inches.
9 inches and 1/4 is an odd number then that is the length of the page. Most of us know the role (if we are not in Europe or Asia) and 8 1/2 inches wide by 11 inches tall, commonly known as paper "Letter" size. If you take a piece of paper and paperboard times, you get a booklet that is 5 inches and 1/2 to 8 1/2 inches. For the Supreme Court, which for some reason does not work. (Interestingly, the size of the text block printed easily fit on a sheet of paper, so probably Rule 33.1 is designed to control margins a little bigger, and nothing else.)

Elspet Gray obituary
player worthy of popular farces, became a dedicated activist handicap
Theacting career Elspet Gray, who has died aged 83, was dimmed, but not extinguished by being so closely linked to his marriage with Brian Rix joker. In 1951, Gray gave birth to a daughter, Shelley, who had Down syndrome. In later life, she was active with her husband, actor and director after leaving the scene in 1977 to work for people with learning disabilities - primarily through the presentation of a series of BBC television and then as Secretary General of Mencap. However, because of the periodic returns to the stage and has maintained a presence on the screen., In 1979, for example, was invited pediatrician at Fawlty Towers, and in 1994, the mother of the first wife Four Weddings and a Funeral
moreraising three children later, Shelley visited each week on a dwelling house which was after the family had done everything possible to "get by" for five years. Both Gray and Rix had the guilt of sending their children away, even if they believe it would improve residential care home, and it would be cruel to expose it to the attention would have received if he had been with his famous parents.
Rix, the chief representative of the comedy drama, British television and film at the time, became an ardent supporter and fundraiser, gray and a staunch defender of their cause. The current Director General of Mencap, Mark Goldring, said Lord and Lady Rix more "made a formidable team in their determination to change the lives of people with intellectual disabilities."
The couple returned to the stage in a revival of the popular comedy dry rot in 1988 and five years later in a presentation titled Tour de Farce, describing the trials and tribulations of the players who make at different stages of history. Some of the material in the Tour de Farce could be considered risqu? side for Gray dignified and beautiful, including the story of a warning notice in a chorus of theater squatting on the toilet to relieve themselves could cause a serious accident. "The women were seriously injured"
But Gray and her husband had always been an unconventional pair. Rix, who came from a wealthy family, ran his own theater company when, aged 25, he hears. Recalled after a day was miserably cold and wet and not have a hangover, but he was obsessed immediately when she came in and lit the scene. Years later I still remember exactly what I used - a green suit, red hair tweedish improve. He gave her a job in the company directory Bridlington where he worked, and asked him to marry her. As she was only 19 years old, she refused.
He did, however, live with it - a little fat comedians over at the time. It was while they were together in the bathroom which was proposed for the umpteenth time, and this time she accepted. Rix visited his production Reluctant Heroes John Chapman and took him to the theater Whitehall - was the first of many jokes there, which made his reputation, and ran from 1950 to 1954. Gray was in the same production, and was followed by a film version. They settled in the capital and began their family.
Gray was born in Inverness, Scotland, and was educated at St Margaret Hastings, and the Presentation Convent Srinagar, in the Kashmir valley, before making her theatrical training at Rada. His first professional appearance in 1947, in the work of Edward, my son, the Grand Theatre, Leeds, who transferred to Her Majesty's Theatre in the West End next month, we give her London debut.
- His role next step comes after another Hero spite of themselves stuffing the clothing of the Wolf (1959), Wyndham, and Garrick in 1967 took part in the season stuffing her husband, who appears in uproar in the House and leave things as they are married. Four years later, he was in four games by Vernon Sylvaine joker, and in 1973 went to the theater O'Keefe Toronto, in a production of Move Over Mrs. Markham. In 1980, she appeared on the Joan Littlewood Theatre Royal Stratford East in the melodrama The streets of London, and in 1983 was Charley's Aunt with Griff Rhys Jones at the Lyric Hammersmith.
in Black Adder (1982), the first series in which Rowan Atkinson began to overthrow British history, who played the legendary Edmund, Duke of Edinburgh, and the gray of his mother, Queen Gertrude of Flanders, wife of Brian Blessed as Richard IV. Not everyone is on the internet, Iain Duncan Smith | Ian Clark
Making universal credit system online only cut many of the poorest people in the wrong side of the digital divide
In September last year, councilors Iain Duncan Smith warned that his attempt to simplify the benefits system was "unworkable and unfair." With the fear that in a recession time workers part would be forced to seek more hours of work or lose their benefits, there were also serious questions that have been made regarding the introduction of universal credit. Foremost among these problems was the decision to make the system completely based on the Internet. This seems at odds with the intentions of Duncan Smith to help people "escape the trap of profits."
A look at the state of the Internet in the UK highlights the difficulties facing the possibility of using this system. For example, according to data released by the Office for National Statistics (ONS), 5.2 million households do not have access to the Internet (20% of all households in Britain). While some of these homes belong to pensioners, a large proportion of house people of working age who therefore suffer as a result of the proposed changes.
According to the latest quarterly update of the Internet published by the ONS, 6.6% of those earning less than ? 200 per week and 5.5% of those earning between ? 200 - ? 299 per week had never used the Internet. In fact, it is only when the ? 700 - ? 799 mark is reached the figure falls below 1%. When you consider that the north-east of England is the only region with a continental connectivity less than 80%, and is also the region with the highest unemployment rate at 9.1%, it is difficult to see the difficulties resulting from a policy change claims online.
However, the real reasons for the lack of internet access are also essential. The recent Internet access - households and individuals by ONS report shows that while 54% claim that simply did not need 22% claim a lack of skills, 15% of equipment costs and blame access costs 14%. No wonder those at the lower end of the economic ladder cite both a lack of skills and cost barriers to Internet access.
- The scope of the criminalization of employment opportunities through this transition to digital has been highlighted in a report Citizens Advice Scotland (CAS). In its report, the CAS said they collected evidence that:
It is difficult to know how widespread this practice is, or how many people were affected, but the penalty for those who are not looking for jobs online is quite unfair, to punish those who do not have Internet access to apply for jobs on other legitimate means. Instead of eliminating the "benefits trap", a review of the system of government benefits is, in fact, creating a trap for thousands of job seekers.
would be, of course, if the infrastructure was in place to provide support. For many public libraries with free internet access has been there. However, with more than 200 public libraries last year closing and being replaced by untrained volunteers trained personnel, although this support was gradually dismantled freely available. In fact, in the north-east, where connectivity is poor and unemployment higher than the national average, Newcastle City Council plans to close 10 public libraries, resulting in communities providing free internet losing support specialized staff.

Bestselling Author Of Children's Books Accuses Public Libraries Of Stealing His Paychecks
goodwill they have built over a lifetime. This is not necessarily just a case of "old cries in the clouds." Theme of this piece is not necessarily old (well, I admit that posts keep moving with each passing birthday) or consistent unnecessarily. ... It's just so horribly, terribly, completely wrong.
Terry Deary, author of Horrible Histories Online books for children have problem with libraries. Perhaps spurred on by the Association of the United Kingdom editorial collective nervous breakdown (library = "The theft of bad taste") last year, has joined several Deary lie-it-all great voice criticizing the existence of libraries and countless free books contained therein. "I do not denigrate libraries, I attack the concept behind the library, which is no longer valid."
Let's stop here for a moment. Once you read the following paragraphs, you can arrive at the conclusion that Deary
librariesattack. I just want you to know that not crazy . When someone attacks the underlying concept of something that is very rare everything was unhurt. There is a reason for this. We will use a metaphor to explain the statement Deary oxymoron:
underlying concepts as the foundation of a house, and when someone like this house Deary attack "foundation "It sounds like the kind of person who, for the sake of humanity, must have several filters installed between the brainstem and mouth. All clear?
good. Moving on.
[S] and took 150 years, we have the idea that we have the right to read books for free at the expense of authors, publishers and taxpayers Board. This is not the Victorian era, when we want to allow access to the literature depleted. We pay for compulsory education to do so.
Well, there are many things to attack there, almost enough to move things ignorant. "The right to read books for free." To tell you the truth, I just realized that this "right", as he was immediately overshadowed by copyright. Who do you think is what gives him " right "to make money writing books? Copyright is granted - not something you
always existed and
always
exist
even more surprised (and not in a good way) that it was "poor" people should be happy that the school system is able to store your library. God forbid that the poor get more than the minimum "taxpayers" give advice. they have problems of survival to overcome their "give a book or two" concerns Deary . So, want to read a bestseller, while remaining on the list. Fuck you, huh? Sorry about your copyright down and all, but at least you could not choose a more socially acceptable target, like Amazon or piracy or literacy rates or something?
What all the other books in the library literature for children written by Terry Deary? If these social leeches buy your own set of reference books as well? I'm sure a lot more time and money went into the development of Encylopaedia Brittanica and yet these journals are in the library
not
pay for all this information . If only points in the direction of the Internet, most libraries offer other services? What if I do not have the service at home? Library closed to the "poor" very good at all.please ... continue.
"People should make the decision to buy books."
No, Terry. No, if there is an option, and certainly not if you can not pay the free option. If you think libraries closing force everyone to start buying books (especially you), then go ahead and take a seat in the packed FAILboat members of the content industry who think piracy will force close people start to buy their offerings. It will be a long trip to an angry very disappointing.
"People will be happy to buy a movie ticket to see Matilda by Roald Dahl, and hope to get the book for free."
I have bad news for you and your traveling companions, Terry: The library lends films. Audiobooks. Video games. CD. And yet, I think it has to do with how you are missing out on greater freedom whenever someone uses your library card.
"books are not public property, and the writers are not Enid Blyton, middle-class women fall into a nice little hobby."

Verizon FiOS, ViaSat Exede lead FCC broadband performance report
How to choose your provider Broadband Internet? For many of us, the market dictates our choice, but a few lucky subscribers get to make your own call, instead opting for the one and the service is only available in a particular location. Verizon FiOS fiber optic solution, and blank exceeds, high bandwidth ViaSat - two common side investments - happen to be the two main candidates in the recent FCC report on broadband performance, which ranks companies based on actual downloading and download speed relative to the bandwidth announced, among other indicators. Too often, providers below the promised performance, with companies such as AT & T, Qwest and head naughty list. However, Verizon and ViaSat are motivated to keep subscribers, exceeding expectations, and certainly not a bad way to do it.
This is the first appearance of ViaSat in this report, due in large part to the recent introduction of the blank exceeds broadband company, after the launch of ViaSat-1 in late 2011. We had fast performance for our own test last year, although it remains a potential problem. The FCC also covers this major drawback, report a latency of 638 ms measured against an average 29.6 ms for the land service - but the general impression seems to be quite positive. The FCC has published some 10,000 words on the subject, so if you have a real opportunity to choose their own service provider, it may be useful to comb the entire report of the agency. It is ready to play for the source link below.

Derek Khanna's Favorite Techdirt Posts Of The Week
Techdirt an excellent resource when we fight SOPA - this time, I worked for Senator Scott Brown, who voted against SOPA and Techdirt Comment provided timely and accessible on topics SOPA and other technologies. Towards the beginning of the fight, when he was called COICA, the content industry came to visit with Senator Scott Brown and has been presented for the first time. It is presented as a bill that is relatively simple, "... end online piracy by blocking the address." My answer was: "Wait a DNS level, but you can not just type the IP address?" It quickly became apparent that this law is very problematic, because it would be censorship and extremely inefficient. AT this time, I wrote a 20-page memo internal to our office COICA was terrible. In my research, from the beginning, there were some articles on this subject, but Techdirt had a number of valuable resources as well as COICA before becoming SOPA / PIPA. This possibility was critical, and I'm not the only one that was used as a Techdirt resources.
is a common - Tactical Washington, DC, to make a problem seem more complicated than it is to intimidate dissenting voices - and unfortunately effective. This is especially true in the intellectual property laws. Even if it is not Certainly the complexity of intellectual property issues, the complexity due to the complexity is not productive, and I understand that can take arguments Techdirt complicated and even distill a public university that has no time to read literature in depth - but may be presented with some of these arguments for the first time.
So with that, I will turn to the stories of the week. This Week Techdirt continues to detail how some of our laws that affect technology have crazy obstacle to both the market and our civil liberties.
Masnick
First song on cell phones unlock now probably be illegal, was there, and their coverage beyond the current groundswell of support to reverse this situation was a great read. This is a question that I am personally involved I wrote the article on this subject in the Atlantic and the application designer and I wrote a follow-up article detailing how his business was closed due to release mobile phones increasingly illegal.
Masnick explains why: "Although the reasoning for not renewing the exemption is that many companies today allow unlocking anyway, this is not true at all levels, and there are many limitations. Just the fact that you have permission to do what you want with a device legally purchased and own care enough. "Many people seem to agree.
demand led now has more than 69,000 signatures, but readers Techdirt need help more than 100,000. This is clearly an issue that involved a lot of people who believe in the basic property rights and should be able to unlock their phones. The first part of the Atlantic reached over a million hits and was number one on Reddit.
Techdirt also consider public knowledge on the topic presented detailed Hangout President Obama yesterday. Despite being the eighth most popular question was not asked (but bloggers find the time to ask President Obama to help your child's name).
Techdirt other items like this week - in the context of the DMCA used to compromise the mechanical repair of your car - highlights how unlocking emission, while in the DMCA was created and sent to protect the copyright was used for radically different. It should not be entirely surprising that the DMCA may necessitate further evaluation and supervision. The DMCA was passed three years before the iPod, six years before Google Books and nine years before the Kindle.
