PlayStation 4 brings new weapons to shifting battle for games market
Sony is preparing to launch the next generation of consoles at a time when sales of boxed games are down and smartphones and tablets offer cheap game for a new demographic of players
Thursday at the headquarters of spaces in New York Hammerstein 2800, Sony is expected to stimulate the next generation of video game consoles. The company has not confirmed anything officially, but experts are convinced that this is where everyone will have a first glimpse of the highly anticipated PlayStation 4.
Meanwhile, Microsoft is working on the sequel to their Xbox 360 console, which should be revealed at E3 this summer in Los Angeles.
new gaming platforms are generally greeted with enthusiasm by fans of technology, but this time things are a little different. PlayStation 2 dominated the gaming world in the 2000s, the industry was transformed by the arrival of smartphones and tablets.
These devices offer gaming experiences cheap, convenient for a new demographic of players who do not necessarily want to pay ? 60 for a game and then sit in front of the television for hours play.
"Why would I want another black box sitting under my TV loud when the phone or tablet you can do almost everything a console can do?" Said Oscar Clark game analyst.
"In a few years that the console will be updated compared to my other devices. Meanwhile, my relationship with my TV is changing. Longer the first screen is only shared screen where you consume content with other members of my family. My main screen is my tablet or phone, so where does the hardware of the console? "
retail games are declining worldwide. In the United States, according to market analysts NPD Group, sales of physical games fell 22% in 2012 to $ 13.26bn in the UK, the market fell 17% to ? 1.59bn. Demand is also falling material: console sales fell 37% in 2012, according to NPD, and newcomers such as the Nintendo Wii U and PlayStation Vita handheld to date have gone wrong
course, is natural lower at the end of a console cycle, but this time, lethargy market could cost Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft expensive because there are new challenges the horizon. U.S. game developer Valve plans to launch its own console, Steam Box, a cheap PC, smaller than connects to the TV and offers hundreds of downloadable games. This year will also see the launch of two new sub-$ 100 consoles based on Google's Android technology. GameStick Ouya and the two platforms are open, meaning that anyone can play without the manufacturer's authorization, an attractive prospect for developers.

- funds are Apple and Google, which have applications in shops and online TV services. Apple is rumored to work on a new version of its Apple TV set-top box, or even a single set of Apple TV, which gives you access to thousands of games at low prices thanks to the App Store without a dedicated console.
Last year, Sony spent $ 380 million in the company Gaikai based in California, has developed a cloud-based technology that allows users to play games over the Internet. Microsoft has hinted that the new Xbox will support cloud-based games.
is therefore likely that the two next generation consoles offer something similar to Spotify for games, allowing players to listen or download new titles in exchange for a monthly subscription.
